“Rats thrive in sewers” Samiya Bashir writes in I Hope This Helps, a new genre-bending book drawing on her 2024 exhibition of the same name at The Africa Center, “so maybe I’m thriving.” Across poetry, essays, music, printmaking, and photography, Bashir reflects on decades of artistic metamorphosis within and beyond the limits of reality, time, money, and work.
For A Cartography in Progress, Triple Canopy and Nightboat will celebrate the launch of I Hope This Helps with readings by Bashir, Erica Hunt, Jaqueline Woodson, and Terrance Hayes, followed by a conversation between Bashir and Derrais Carter, who wrote the book’s afterword. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Attendance is on a first-come, first-served basis and will be limited to the legal capacity of the venue. RSVPs do not guarantee entry, but help us better prepare for the event and keep you updated about the program. We recommend arriving when doors open to secure your seat.
